Visitors to Erddig this weekend will have the chance to join in with National Tree Week.
The National trust property will be hosting working demonstrations and activities between noon and 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
Joiners will be at work in the joiner’s shop, shire horses will give traditional logging demonstrations, there will be walking stick making and sales and pole-lathe demonstrations by the wardens.
This weekend also sees the launch of Erddig’s Tree Trail around the garden. The trail includes recently planted evergreen oaks, quercus ilex, where a circular hedge sheltered a bowling green in the 18th century, and the twin stemmed silver birch, betula pendula, which was two seedlings planted together and at one time ‘tapped’ for the sweet sap that rose in profusion in the spring. This would be brewed into birch sap wine.
There will be children’s craft activities throughout the day. The tea room, shop, bookshop, outbuildings and gardens are open from 11am-4pm and the historic kitchens are open.
