Environment Wales has given a grant to buy 18 bicycles and helmets for National Trust volunteers to use around the Erddig estate.
Many volunteers take part in working holidays, work as countryside volunteers, or in other community groups such as the Prince’s Trust, and now they can get around the 1,200 acre park using environmentally friendly transport. Previously a hired minibus or Erddig’s Landrover were used.
The Trust promotes the greener, alternative means of transport such as the bicycles, making them available to volunteers to use on their days off for exploring the surrounding area.
Teams of 18 people stay for a weeks residential on the estate. They undertake a wide range of conservation work, with many of them experiencing the ‘great outdoors’ for the first time. Giving volunteers the opportunity of using the bicycles encourages the understanding of green transport, an appreciation of the surrounding countryside and has the added benefit of increasing fitness.
